Buddhism: A religion founded in ancient India by Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, that emphasizes the path to enlightenment through moral discipline, meditation and the realization of the Four Noble Truths. It has had a significant influence on various cultures around the world, including Japan, where it was introduced in the 6th century and became one of the country's major religions alongside Shintoism. Buddhism in Japan is characterized by its unique blend of native beliefs and practices with Buddhist teachings, giving rise to distinct schools such as Zen, Nichiren, and Jodo Shinshu. The religion continues to shape Japanese culture and identity, influencing art, literature, philosophy, and social values.
