Biochemistry

Definition of Biochemistry as it relates to Science, Medicine, Virology

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. It involves understanding how biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids, function and interact with each other to maintain life. In the context of virology, biochemistry plays a crucial role in understanding how viruses infect cells, replicate their genetic material, and manipulate host cell machinery for their own benefit. This knowledge can inform the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines. Thus, Biochemistry within Virology is concerned with the molecular mechanisms underlying viral infection and replication, and the biochemical interactions between viruses and their hosts.
