Obstetrics And Gynecology

Definition of Obstetrics And Gynecology as it relates to Science, Medicine

Obstetrics and Gynecology, often abbreviated as OB/GYN, is a medical specialty that deals with two main aspects of female reproductive health: pregnancy and childbirth (obstetrics) and the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the female reproductive system (gynecology). In the field of obstetrics, an OB/GYN provides care for women throughout their pregnancies, delivering babies and managing any complications that may arise. In gynecology, an OB/GYN diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions affecting the female reproductive organs, including infections, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and cancer. OB/GYNs also provide routine care such as Pap smears and breast exams to screen for cancer and other diseases. This field requires a strong foundation in both basic science and medical knowledge, as well as extensive training in surgical techniques and patient care.
