Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Physical Education, Sports Medicine

Special Education refers to a distinct field within education that focuses on catering to the unique needs of students with disabilities, developmental delays, and other exceptionalities. It encompasses a variety of instructional strategies, methodologies, and accommodations designed to help these learners acquire knowledge, skills, and values in a supportive environment. Special Education professionals collaborate closely with families, teachers, medical personnel, and community resources to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) that address each student's specific needs, strengths, and goals. These programs may include specialized curricula, assistive technologies, behavioral interventions, and therapeutic services, among others. While Special Education shares some common ground with related fields such as Physical Education, Sports Medicine, and general Education, it is distinct in its emphasis on addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities and exceptionalities, and its focus on developing individualized plans to support their learning and development.
