Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Home Economics Education, Reading Instruction

Special Education refers to an educational approach tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, such as cognitive impairments, learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, speech and language impairments, visual or auditory impairment, autism, deaf-blindness, orthopedic impairments, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. This approach may involve individualized instruction, specialized teaching methods and materials, assistive technology, behavior management strategies, counseling services, and related services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology. The goal of special education is to provide students with disabilities the opportunity to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Special education programs may be provided in regular classrooms, resource rooms, self-contained classrooms, or separate schools, depending on the individual needs of each student. Home Economics Education and Reading Instruction are specialized areas within special education that focus on teaching students practical life skills related to home management and literacy development respectively.
