Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Physical Education, Motor Development

Special Education refers to a specialized area of education designed to meet the unique needs of students with intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, and/or learning disabilities. It encompasses a range of instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications that enable these students to access and engage in the educational curriculum. Special education teachers collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to create individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, which outline specific goals, objectives, and services necessary for their academic success. Physical education and motor development are key components of special education as they promote physical activity and movement skills for students with disabilities, enhancing their overall health and well-being. Special education also emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning, self-determination, and advocacy to support students in becoming independent, productive members of society.
