Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Academic Degrees, Elementary Education

Special Education refers to a specialized field within education that caters to students with unique learning needs and disabilities. It encompasses academic instruction, support services, and modifications tailored to meet the individual needs of students who require additional assistance beyond what is typically provided in traditional classrooms. Special educators work collaboratively with general education teachers, families, and other professionals to design and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address each student's unique learning profile, strengths, and challenges. The goal of special education is to provide students with disabilities equal access to educational opportunities, promote their academic and social development, and prepare them for post-secondary success. Special education degrees are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels, equipping educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to support students with exceptionalities in various educational settings.
