Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Home Economics Education, Educational Psychology

Special education refers to a specialized and individualized instructional approach designed to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities, impairments, or other exceptionalities that prevent them from accessing the general education curriculum. This may include students with intellectual disabilities, hearing or visual impairments, emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other health impairments. Special education aims to provide these students with equitable opportunities for academic, social, and emotional growth and development, often involving a range of supportive services such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and counseling. It is typically provided in a separate classroom or resource room, but may also be delivered through inclusion models that integrate special education students into general education classrooms with the support of specialized instructional staff. Special education teachers must possess specialized knowledge and skills to effectively assess, plan, instruct, and evaluate students with disabilities, often collaborating closely with other educators, related service providers, families, and community agencies to create comprehensive, individualized education programs (IEPs) that address each student's unique needs and goals.
