Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Academic Degrees, Curriculum Development

Special education refers to an educational approach tailored to meet the unique needs of students with intellectual, physical, emotional, and/or social disabilities. It encompasses various teaching methods, adaptations, assistive technology, and accommodations designed to help students learn effectively. Special educators work closely with general education teachers, families, therapists, and other professionals to create a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the student's individualized education program (IEP). The curriculum development process involves assessing the student's strengths, weaknesses, interests, and goals, as well as identifying evidence-based instructional strategies that promote academic growth. Special education also focuses on developing students' social skills, self-advocacy, independence, and career readiness.
