Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Kindergarten Education, Inclusive Education

Special education refers to instructional practices and services designed to support students with diverse learning needs, including those with intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, and communication disabilities. It aims to provide equal educational opportunities and ensure that these students can fully participate in mainstream classroom settings, alongside their non-disabled peers. Special educators collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to create individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs, abilities, and goals. These IEPs may include accommodations, modifications, and specialized instruction to help students access the general education curriculum and make progress toward their learning objectives. Special education also promotes social skills development, self-advocacy, and independence, empowering students with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives beyond the classroom.
