Special Education

Definition of Special Education as it relates to Education, Continuing Education

Special Education refers to a specialized area within education that caters to students with unique learning needs, including physical, mental, cognitive, emotional, and linguistic differences. It is designed to help these students access the same educational opportunities as their non-disabled peers by providing tailored instructional strategies, materials, and support services. Special Education professionals often work in collaboration with general education teachers, administrators, families, and related service providers to create individualized education programs (IEPs) for eligible students. These IPs outline specific learning goals, accommodations, modifications, and related services to help students with disabilities make effective progress in the least restrictive environment possible. Special Education also emphasizes the development of students' self-advocacy skills, social-emotional growth, and functional living skills to prepare them for post-secondary success. Continuing education opportunities are available for special education professionals to stay up-to-date with best practices, research findings, and legal requirements in the field.
