Elephants

Definition of Elephants as it relates to Animals, Animals By Taxonomy, Mammals

Elephants are large mammals known for their long trunks, large ears, and ivory tusks. They are found in various parts of Africa and Asia, living in diverse habitats such as forests, grasslands, and deserts. As members of the Mammal class, elephants share common characteristics with other mammals, including being warm-blooded, having fur or hair, and nursing their young with milk produced by mammary glands. Within the Animal kingdom, elephants belong to the Phylum Chordata, which includes animals with a notochord, or a dorsal nerve cord, during their development. Elephants are further classified under the Order Proboscidea, which contains only two surviving families: Elephantidae and Deinotheriidae. The family Elephantidae includes two genera: Loxodonta (African elephants) and Elephas (Asian elephants). In summary, elephants are large mammals with distinct physical characteristics that make them unique within the Mammal class and Animal kingdom. They belong to the Order Proboscidea and are further classified into two genera of the family Elephantidae.
