Hippos, scientifically known as Hippopotamus amphibius, are large, semi-aquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They belong to the family Hippopotamidae and are one of only two extant species in this family, the other being the pygmy hippo. Hippos are characterized by their robust bodies, short legs, and distinctive snout. They have a stocky build and can weigh up to 3,000 kilograms. Hippos have a unique skin that secretes a red substance, which acts as a natural sunscreen and antibiotic. Hippos are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses and aquatic plants. They spend most of their day submerged in water to keep cool, as they do not have sweat glands. At night, they emerge from the water to graze on land. Despite their massive size, hippos are surprisingly agile and can run at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour on land. They are also excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes underwater. Hippos have a complex social structure and live in groups called pods, which can consist of up to 100 individuals. Male hippos establish dominance through displays of aggression and physical fights, while females are more passive and form close bonds with each other. Unfortunately, hippos are currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-hippo conflict. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this magnificent species and their habitats.
