Hippos, also known as Hippopotamuses, are large, semi-aquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are one of the most recognizable animals on the continent, with their distinctive stocky bodies, barrel-shaped torsos, and wide-opening mouths filled with large teeth. Hippos are primarily herbivores, feeding on a diet of grasses and aquatic plants. Despite their massive size, they can move gracefully both in water and on land, and are known for their aggressive behavior towards other animals and humans. They spend most of the day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep cool, and only emerge at night to feed. Hippos play an important role in the African ecosystem as grazers and engineers of wetland habitats, shaping the landscape through their feeding and wallowing behaviors.
