Mammals

Definition of Mammals as it relates to Animals, Insects

Mammals are a group of warm-blooded vertebrates characterized by the presence of mammary glands, which produce milk to feed their young. They belong to the class Mammalia and are found on every continent except Antarctica. Mammals have hair or fur and most have three middle ear bones that enable them to hear a wide range of frequencies. They vary greatly in size, from tiny bats and shrews to large whales and elephants. Mammals can be carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, or insectivores. Some mammals are solitary, while others live in groups called herds, packs, or colonies. They have complex social structures and exhibit a range of behaviors such as play, grooming, and communication through vocalizations and body language. Mammals also have a high degree of brain development, which allows for advanced learning and problem-solving abilities.
