Myriapods are a group of terrestrial arthropods, characterized by having elongated bodies with multiple segments and paired appendages on most segments. They belong to the phylum Arthropoda, which also includes insects, crustaceans, spiders and others. Myriapods are divided into four classes: Chilopoda (centipedes), Diplopoda (millipedes), Pauropoda and Symphyla. These creatures are typically found in soil, leaf litter and other humid environments, where they play an important role in decomposition and nutrient cycling. They are predominantly detritivores, but some species can be predatory or herbivorous.
