Bison

Definition of Bison as it relates to Animals, Prey Animals, Buffalo

Bison are large, hoofed mammals that belong to the family Bovidae. They are native to North America and Europe and are known for their shaggy brown coats and distinctive humps on their shoulders. Bison are herbivores, feeding primarily on grasses and other vegetation. They are also considered prey animals due to their size and the fact that they have several predators, such as wolves and bears. Despite their name, bison are not actually a type of buffalo, although the two species are closely related. Bison are often referred to as "buffalo" in North America because early European settlers mistakenly thought they were the same animal as the water buffalo found in Asia. In reality, bison and buffalo are distinct species that belong to different genera.
