Exopterygota, also known as hemimetabolous insects, refers to a subclass of insects characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. This means that their young resemble their adult form and gradually develop through several stages or instars outside the body of the parent. This group includes familiar insects such as grasshoppers, mantises, termites, and true bugs. These creatures typically have well-developed external mouthparts and wings that develop gradually during their development. Exopterygota is one of two subclasses within the class Insecta, the other being Endopterygota, or holometabolous insects.
