Proboscidea
Proboscidea is an order of large mammals primarily recognized by their distinctive elongated noses, also known as proboscides. Native to various regions around the world, they are herbivores that inhabit diverse environments such as forests, grasslands, and deserts. Proboscideans are highly intelligent and social animals, often living in complex matriarchal societies. They possess a unique skeletal structure characterized by large, columnar limbs and a robust body, which supports their massive size and weight. The order includes two extant families: Elephantidae, comprising African and Asian elephants, and Elephantimorpha, which encompasses the African forest elephant. Historically, Proboscidea also included several other now-extinct families, such as Mammutidae (mastodons) and Deinotheriidae (deinotheres).
