Rhinoceroses
Rhinoceroses are large, herbivorous mammals that belong to the family Rhinocerotidae within the order Perissodactyla. They are characterized by their distinctive horns, which are made of keratin and grow from their skulls. There are five extant species of rhinoceros: the black rhinoceros and white rhinoceros of Africa, and the Indian rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros of Asia. Rhinoceroses are known for their massive size, with some individuals weighing up to 2,000 kilograms. They have thick, armored skin that provides protection from predators and the elements. Rhinoceroses are also known for their poor eyesight, but they have a keen sense of smell and hearing. They are solitary animals, with males and females only coming together to mate. Rhinoceros populations have been severely impacted by habitat loss and poaching, and several species are now critically endangered.
