Torah

Definition of Torah as it relates to Languages, Hebrew, Biblical Hebrew, Hebrew Bible

The Torah, also known as the Pentateuch, is the first five books of the Hebrew Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Written in Biblical Hebrew, it serves as the foundation for Jewish law, thought, and practice, and contains the stories of creation, the patriarchs and matriarchs, the giving of the Ten Commandments, and the journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land. As the opening section of the Hebrew Bible, the Torah lays the groundwork for the religious and ethical teachings that follow, making it an essential component in understanding the larger context of the Hebrew Bible as a whole.
