Paleontology
Definition of Paleontology as it relates to Science, Earth Science, Evolution
Paleontology is the study of life that existed prior to, and sometimes including, the start of the Holocene Epoch roughly 11,700 years ago. It encompasses the examination of plant and animal fossils, along with the study of biogeography, geochronology, and stratigraphy. Paleontology contributes to our understanding of evolution by providing evidence for the existence of extinct species, their adaptations, and their relationships to present-day organisms. As a component of Earth Science within the Evolution hierarchy, paleontology emphasizes the historical aspect of life on Earth, revealing patterns in the development and diversification of species throughout geological time.
