Paleontology

Definition of Paleontology as it relates to Science, Earth Science, Ecology

Paleontology, as part of the Ecology hierarchy within Earth Science and ultimately Science, studies prehistoric life through the examination of plant and animal fossils. It seeks to understand the characteristics, behaviors, and environments of organisms that existed during various geological periods by analyzing remains or traces left behind in rock formations. This knowledge contributes significantly to our comprehension of evolutionary processes, extinction events, and climatic changes over time, thereby enriching our understanding of ecological systems and the natural world.
