Art History

Definition of Art History as it relates to Art, Fauvist Art, Post Impressionism

Romanticism is an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, characterized by heightened emotions, individualism, and a strong connection to nature. It emphasizes imagination, freedom, and the power of the human spirit, often rejecting the strict rules and conventions of classical art. In literature, it is marked by a focus on emotion, heroism, and the beauty of the natural world. In visual arts, Romanticism can be seen in the works of artists such as Eugène Delacroix, J.M.W. Turner, and Caspar David Friedrich, who used vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes to convey their emotional responses to the world around them. While it predates both Impressionism and Fauvist Art, its emphasis on subjectivity, personal expression, and the importance of emotion can be seen as an influence for these later movements.
