Figurative Art

Definition of Figurative Art as it relates to Art, Expressionist Art

Figurative Art refers to artistic works that depict recognizable objects, figures, or scenes, often realistically but not limited to such representations. It is characterized by the use of forms and subject matter derived from observation, imbued with an artist's interpretation and emotional response. Expressionist Art falls under the umbrella of Figurative Art, as it too depicts reality but with heightened intensity, distortion, and exaggeration to convey emotions and ideas. In contrast to Abstract Art, which disregards visual references to the world in favor of form and color, Figurative Art maintains a connection to reality, albeit filtered through an artist's unique perspective.
