Performance Art

Definition of Performance Art as it relates to Art

Performance Art is an avant-garde art form in which the artist uses their body, voice, and/or actions as the medium to create a live experience for the audience. It emerged in the early 20th century as a means of challenging traditional notions of art and performance, often incorporating elements of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. The art form emphasizes the process of creation over the finished product, with the artist's presence and interaction with the audience being central to the work. Performance Art can take many forms, from durational pieces that last for hours or even days, to spontaneous actions that occur in public spaces. At its core, Performance Art seeks to provoke thought, challenge conventions, and explore new possibilities for artistic expression.
