Definition of Performance Art as it relates to Art, Surrealism, Antonin Artaud

Performance Art, an art form characterized by the artist's use of their own body and actions as the medium, draws inspiration from various movements including Surrealism. Performance Artists may employ shocking, unusual or provocative behavior, often blurring the line between reality and fiction, in order to challenge societal norms and provoke thought. The French playwright and theater director Antonin Artaud, with his theories of a "Theater of Cruelty", is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of this genre. His ideas centered on using art to express inner emotion and desire, even if it means causing discomfort or pain to the audience. Performance Art can take many forms, including live performances, installations, and video art, all with the goal of engaging the viewer in a unique and thought-provoking experience.
