Surrealism

Definition of Surrealism as it relates to Art, Conceptual Art

Surrealism is an artistic and literary movement that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by its exploration of the irrational mind and the subconscious. It seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of reality and to reveal the hidden workings of the human psyche. Surrealist art often incorporates dreamlike or fantastical elements, and is heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud's theories on the unconscious. Conceptual Art, on the other hand, is a contemporary movement that emphasizes the idea behind a work of art over its physical form. It challenges traditional notions of what constitutes art and often incorporates non-traditional materials and methods. However, Surrealism has had a profound influence on Conceptual Art, as both movements seek to push the boundaries of artistic expression and challenge established norms. Ultimately, Surrealism can be seen as a precursor to Conceptual Art, as it laid the groundwork for questioning the nature of art and reality.
