It emphasizes the importance of ideas and concepts in art-making, rather than focusing on the physical manifestation of those ideas. This approach can be seen in various forms across different mediums, such as Conceptual Art, where the concept is the primary focus, often taking precedence over traditional artistic skills or craftsmanship. Surrealism, a related movement that emerged in the early 20th century, also placed a strong emphasis on the conceptual, using dreams and the subconscious to generate unexpected and irrational imagery. Overall, Conceptualism represents a shift away from purely visual or formal concerns in art, instead emphasizing the intellectual and philosophical dimensions of artistic practice.
