Modern Art

Definition of Modern Art as it relates to Art, Impressionism, Oil Painting

Expressionism is an artistic movement characterized by a focus on conveying subjective emotion and personal experience rather than objective reality. It emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a reaction to Impressionism, which was seen as too concerned with capturing fleeting sensory impressions. Expressionist artists often used bold colors, exaggerated forms, and loose brushstrokes to create emotionally charged works that conveyed their own inner world rather than attempting to accurately depict the external world. This movement spanned various mediums, including painting, printmaking, and theater. In oil painting specifically, expressionists employed a dynamic use of color and form to evoke strong emotional responses in the viewer, often through distortion and abstraction.
