Expressionism
Definition of Expressionism as it relates to Art, Fauvist Art
Expressionism is an artistic movement characterized by the distortion and exaggeration of form in order to convey emotion, as well as the use of bold, vibrant colors. It emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the rapid industrialization and urbanization of society, and sought to express the inner world of the artist rather than the objective reality of the external world. Fauvist art is considered a subset of expressionism, known for its wild brushwork and intense use of color. Overall, expressionism represents a departure from traditional realism in favor of a more subjective, emotional approach to art-making.
