Visual Arts

Definition of Visual Arts as it relates to Art, Expressionist Art, Orphism

Fauvism, an art movement originating in early 20th century France, is characterized by the use of bold, vibrant colors and expressive brushwork. Fauvist artists sought to break away from traditional representational painting and instead emphasized subjective emotion and personal experience. The name "Fauves," meaning "wild beasts," was given to these artists due to their perceived wild, uninhibited use of color and form. Fauvism had a significant influence on later art movements such as Expressionism and Orphism, and is considered an important precursor to abstract art.
