Secondary Education

Definition of Secondary Education as it relates to Education, Academic Degrees, Special Needs Education

Secondary Education refers to the phase of education that follows primary education and precedes tertiary education, typically encompassing students between the ages of 11 to 18 years old. This level of education is often divided into two stages: lower secondary education (grades 6-8 or 7-9) and upper secondary education (grades 9-12 or 10-12). It builds upon the foundational knowledge and skills acquired during primary education, with a focus on preparing students for higher education, vocational training, or entry into the workforce. Secondary Education is characterized by a more specialized curriculum that allows students to explore their interests and aptitudes in greater depth. Students are typically required to select a core set of subjects, such as mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies, along with elective courses in areas such as art, music, physical education, and technology. Special Needs Education is an integral part of Secondary Education, providing support and accommodations for students with disabilities or other special needs. This may include individualized instruction, assistive technology, and specialized curriculum to help students reach their full potential. Academic Degrees are not typically awarded at the secondary education level, but students may earn certificates or diplomas upon completion of a secondary education program. These credentials serve as proof of academic achievement and can be used to gain admission to colleges and universities or to pursue vocational training programs.
