Secondary Education

Definition of Secondary Education as it relates to Education, Academic Degrees, Special Education

Secondary Education refers to the period of formal education typically undertaken by individuals aged 11-18, although this can vary depending on the country and education system in question. It is often divided into two stages: lower secondary education, which covers the first three or four years of this period, and upper secondary education, which covers the final few years leading up to graduation. During this stage of education, students build upon the foundational knowledge and skills acquired during primary education, with a greater emphasis on specialized subjects and critical thinking skills. Students may choose from a range of academic and vocational courses, depending on their interests and career goals. In some cases, students may also have the opportunity to pursue additional qualifications or certifications, such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses or the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program. Special education services may be available to students with disabilities or other special needs during secondary education. These services are designed to help students access the curriculum and achieve their full potential, and may include accommodations such as modified assignments, assistive technology, or one-on-one instruction. Academic degrees are not typically awarded during secondary education, although students who complete this stage of education may be eligible to apply for admission to college or university programs. In some cases, students may also have the opportunity to earn college credit through dual enrollment programs or other early college initiatives.
