Astrobiology

Definition of Astrobiology as it relates to Science, Environmental Science

Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary field that explores the origins, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. It combines elements of several scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, geology, and physics to investigate the possibility of extraterrestrial life and the conditions necessary for life to exist elsewhere in the cosmos. Astrobiologists study the extremes of Earth's environment as analogues for potential extraterrestrial habitats, analyze the composition of planetary atmospheres for signs of life, and search for biosignatures in the data returned by spacecraft missions. The ultimate goal of astrobiology is to understand the nature of life and its place in the universe.
