The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball, the other being the National League. Established in 1901, it currently consists of 15 teams divided into three divisions: the East, Central, and West. The league operates under a designated hitter rule, which allows for a batter to be replaced by a pinch hitter when the pitcher is up to bat. This rule differentiates the American League from the National League, where pitchers are required to bat for themselves.
