Definition of American League as it relates to Sports, Major League Baseball, Sports Pacific League

The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball, the other being the National League. Established in 1901, it currently consists of 15 teams divided into three divisions: the East, Central, and West. The league operates under a designated hitter rule, which allows for a batter to be replaced by a pinch hitter when the pitcher is up to bat. This rule differentiates the American League from the National League, where pitchers are required to bat for themselves. Throughout its history, the American League has produced many legendary players and teams, contributing to the rich tradition of baseball in the United States.
