Definition of American League as it relates to Sports, Major League Baseball, Sports American League

The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada, the other being the National League. Established in 1901, the league consists of 15 teams divided into three divisions: East, Central, and West. The American League is known for using the designated hitter (DH) rule, which allows a team to use another player to bat in place of the pitcher. This rule creates a unique strategic dynamic compared to the National League, where the pitcher must also hit. Throughout its history, the American League has featured some of the most iconic players and teams in baseball, including Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and the New York Yankees.
