American League

Definition of American League as it relates to Sports, Major League Baseball, Sports Pacific League, International League

The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada, with the other being the National League. Established in 1901, it consists of 15 teams divided into three divisions: East, Central, and West. Each team plays a 162-game schedule during the regular season, with the top team from each division and a wild card team advancing to the postseason. The American League uses the designated hitter rule, which allows for a player to bat in place of the pitcher. Teams in the American League compete against teams in the National League during interleague play. The league's championship is determined through the American League Championship Series, with the winner advancing to face the National League champion in the World Series.
