Definition of American League as it relates to Sports, Major League Baseball, Sports American League, Series, Baseball

The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball, the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1901 and currently consists of 15 teams, with each team playing 162 games in a regular season that runs from April to September. The American League is unique in that it allows for the use of a designated hitter, a player who bats in place of the pitcher. At the end of the regular season, the team with the best record in each league advances to the World Series, a best-of-seven championship series. Within the American League, there are three divisions: East, Central, and West. The winners of each division, along with a wild card team, advance to the postseason. The American League has produced many legendary players, teams and moments in baseball history, making it an integral part of the broader category of Major League Baseball.
