The American League is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1901 and currently consists of 15 teams, divided into three divisions: East, Central, and West. The league plays under a designated hitter rule, which allows a extra batter to hit in place of the pitcher. The American League champions compete against the National League champions in the World Series, the annual championship game of Major League Baseball. Teams in the American League have a rich history and tradition, with many hall-of-fame players and iconic moments that have shaped the sport of baseball as we know it today.
