Learning Disabilities

Definition of Learning Disabilities as it relates to Education, Elementary Education, Health Education

Learning Disabilities refers to a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs an individual's ability to process and retain information, leading to difficulties in academic performance and learning. It is characterized by persistent struggles with reading, writing, math, or other cognitive skills despite average or above-average intelligence. Learning disabilities are not related to intelligence or motivation, but rather to how the brain processes information. They can manifest as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or other specific learning disorders and often coexist with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or other developmental delays. Early identification and intervention are crucial for managing learning disabilities and supporting academic success. Education professionals in elementary education and health education play a critical role in recognizing the signs of learning disabilities, providing accommodations and support, and collaborating with families and specialists to address students' unique learning needs.
