Supply Chain Management

Definition of Supply Chain Management as it relates to Business, Business Planning, Operations Management

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the systematic coordination and management of activities involved in the production and delivery of a product or service, from raw materials sourcing to end customer delivery. It encompasses business planning, operations management, and the integration of various business functions such as procurement, logistics, inventory management, production planning, and demand forecasting. SCM aims to optimize the flow of goods, information, and finances throughout the entire supply chain, to reduce costs, improve efficiency, enhance customer satisfaction, and increase profitability for all parties involved. It involves a deep understanding of the interdependencies between different elements in the supply chain, as well as the ability to anticipate and respond to changes in demand, supply, and other external factors that can impact the smooth functioning of the supply chain. SCM is a critical business function in today's globalized economy, where companies must manage complex and dynamic supply chains that span multiple countries, cultures, and time zones.
