Ecology

Definition of Ecology as it relates to Animals, Mammals, Marine Mammals

Ecology is the study of interrelationships among organisms and their biophysical environment, considering both the abiotic and biotic factors that influence ecosystems and populations over time. In this context, animals encompass all members of the kingdom Animalia, characterized by mobility, heterotrophy, and a lack of cell walls. Mammals represent a class of animals known for features such as hair or fur, mammary glands, and three middle ear bones, which together contribute to their unique ecological roles. Marine mammals are a subset of mammals that have adapted to life in aquatic environments, including whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, manatees, dugongs, and others, each playing vital parts in their respective ecosystems. Ecology seeks to understand the complex interactions among these diverse organisms and their environments, elucidating patterns of distribution, abundance, behavior, and evolution while addressing pressing conservation concerns.
