Definition of Virology as it relates to Science, Life Science, Biology, Microbiology
Virology is the study of viruses, including their structure, classification, and evolution, as well as how they infect and replicate within host cells. As a field within microbiology, virology focuses on the smallest and simplest of biological agents, which are characterized by their lack of cellular structure and their reliance on host cells for replication. Virologists use a variety of techniques to study viruses, including genetic analysis, electron microscopy, and biochemical assays. The insights gained from virology research have important implications for public health, as many diseases are caused by viral infections. Understanding the molecular basis of viral pathogenesis can inform the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines, and help to mitigate the impact of viral outbreaks on global health.
