Protein synthesis is the process by which cells create proteins, using genetic information encoded in DNA and RNA. It is a fundamental aspect of molecular biology, playing a critical role in cellular biology and life science. During protein synthesis, the sequence of nucleotides in DNA is first transcribed into a complementary strand of messenger RNA (mRNA). This mRNA molecule then serves as a template for the assembly of amino acids into a polypeptide chain, through a process called translation. Translation occurs at the ribosomes, which are complex cellular structures composed of proteins and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). The mRNA molecule binds to the ribosome, where it is translated into a sequence of amino acids by transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules. Each tRNA molecule carries a specific amino acid that corresponds to a particular codon (a sequence of three nucleotides) in the mRNA. The resulting polypeptide chain may then undergo additional processing, such as folding into a specific three-dimensional structure or being cleaved into smaller peptides, before becoming functional as a protein. Protein synthesis is essential for many cellular functions, including metabolism, signaling, and structural support.
