Invertebrates
Definition of Invertebrates as it relates to Animals
Invertebrates are animals lacking a backbone or spinal column, making up an incredibly diverse group encompassing over 95% of all animal species. This vast array includes animals such as insects, mollusks, worms, and arthropods, among many others. The absence of a spine allows for a wide range of body plans and adaptations to various ecological niches, resulting in a plethora of unique forms and functions. Invertebrates contribute significantly to global ecosystems by serving as primary producers, decomposers, and predators, maintaining balance within their environments.
