Invertebrates
Definition of Invertebrates as it relates to Animals, Zoo Animals, Fish
Invertebrates refer to animals lacking a backbone, making up approximately 97% of all known animal species. They inhabit diverse habitats and exhibit varied body forms, such as sponges, jellyfish, worms, mollusks, echinoderms, and arthropods. Invertebrates display remarkable adaptations for survival, including complex behaviors, bioluminescence, camouflage, and venomous defenses. Their ecological roles are vital in food chains, nutrient cycling, pollination, and ecosystem engineering. Despite their simplicity, the study of invertebrates contributes significantly to understanding animal evolution, development, behavior, and biomedical research.
