Definition of Immunology as it relates to Science, Medicine, Pathology

Immunology is the study of the immune system, which defends the body against harmful organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. As part of Pathology, it focuses on understanding how immune responses are triggered and regulated, as well as the consequences of immune dysfunction in diseases like autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, and cancer. It is closely related to other medical fields within Medicine, including Infectious Diseases and Oncology, and has applications in basic research, diagnostics, and therapeutics in Science. Immunologists use a variety of techniques to study the immune system, including molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and bioinformatics, making it a diverse and interdisciplinary field. Overall, immunology is a critical component of Pathology, providing insights into the mechanisms of disease and informing the development of new treatments.
