Minimalism
Hard-edge painting is an abstract style characterized by clearly defined edges and solid areas of color, often featuring bold geometric shapes. It emerged in the 1950s and 60s as a reaction against the gestural brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism, with artists seeking to create a more impersonal and objective form of abstraction. The style is closely associated with Pop Art and Contemporary Pop, as it shares their emphasis on clean lines, bright colors, and mass-produced imagery. Hard-edge paintings often have a flat, two-dimensional appearance, and may incorporate elements of graphic design or commercial art. The style is also related to Minimalism, Optical Art, and Color Field painting.
