Insects

Definition of Insects as it relates to Animals, Zoo Animals

Insects are small, invertebrate animals that form the phylum Arthropoda and the class Insecta. They possess a segmented body, typically with six legs and one or two pairs of wings, depending on the species. Insects are incredibly diverse, with over a million described species, making up more than half of all known living organisms. They can be found in nearly every habitat on Earth, including forests, grasslands, deserts, freshwater and marine environments, and even the most extreme climates. Insects play crucial roles in ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and prey for other animals. Some insects are also beneficial to humans, such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs, while others can be pests or transmit diseases. As zoo animals, insects provide opportunities for visitors to observe and learn about their fascinating biology, behavior, and ecological importance in a controlled environment.
